The "Sort By" and "Search Within" menus work in tandem and you should experiment with different combinations of each to best understand them.

For example, "All Items" sorted by "Time (Descending)" will display the most recently archived items. Whereas "Items For Sale" sorted by "Time (Descending)" will display items with sale listings that were most recently launched.
